A GHMC contract sweeper died after being hit by a police patrolling vehicle at Rein Bazaar early on Thursday. The head constable who was driving the car did not have a driving licence.According to the police, the woman identified as M. Sai Amma, a resident of Saidabad, was sweeping the road at Noor Hotel in the Bada Bazaar stretch when an Innova police patrol car driven by head constable Ashok rammed into her. The woman collapsed and died on the way to Osmania General Hospital.

The Rein Bazaar police said that the head constable was driving as the home guard who was the assigned driver of the vehicle had gone to the washroom.“Around 7 a.m, there was a phone call to the police station that some cow vigilantes are creating trouble. The head constable got into the Innova and drove to the spot. On the way, a bus was standing on the road and the woman sweeper was working. The bus was yellow in colour and so were the clothes worn by the victim, so the driver did not notice her,” said sub-inspector, V. Yogendar.

The woman who was injured was rushed to Osmania General Hospital by the police but died on the way. She was declared brought dead by the doctors. The accident was caught on the closed circuit cameras installed in the area. In the video, the driver can be seen.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) V. Satyanarayana said that as the head constable did not have a driving licence, a case under the Motor Vehicle Act was registered apart from section 304 (A) of the IPC – Causing death by negligence.

“The head constable is in police custody and will be produced before court on Friday. A report will be sent to the police commissioner regarding the incident,” the official said.
